The Importance of Molecular Testing in Personalized Cancer Treatment

Dr. Joy Trueblood is a highly experienced and board-certified pathologist with a wealth of professional experience in the field. She received her board certification from the American Board of Pathology in 1990, and later went on to earn certification in cytopathology in 1996.
From November 2007 to December 2019, Dr. Trueblood served as the Medical Director of the Department of Pathology at The Iowa Clinic, PC in West Des Moines, IA. In this role, she oversaw the administrative operations of the anatomic pathology lab, managing a team of five full-time technologists. Additionally, she was responsible for the examination and interpretation of histologic and cytologic preparations, as well as interpretation of in-house fine needle aspiration biopsy specimens. Dr. Trueblood was known for her excellent communication skills, regularly liaising with medical providers both within and outside of The Iowa Clinic, PC to provide diagnoses and consultative reports.
Dr. Trueblood’s areas of interest within pathology include breast, gynecologic, genitourinary, and gastrointestinal surgical pathology, as well as cytopathology. She was particularly skilled in evaluating and interpreting gynecologic Pap tests using the ThinPrep© processing and imaging system, as well as non-gynecologic cytology evaluation and interpretation. She was also responsible for performing HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) reflex testing on all “ASCUS” cases and occasionally specially-requested Pap cases per the ordering clinician.
Prior to her time at The Iowa Clinic, PC, Dr. Trueblood held several positions at Mercy One Medical Center in Des Moines, IA. From May 1992 to June 2006, she served as the Medical Director of the Cytology Laboratory and Mercy School of Cytotechnology, as well as Adjunct Professor of Pathology courses at Des Moines University. She also served as Vice Chairman and Acting Chief of the Department of Pathology at Mercy One Medical Center from 2005-2007.
Throughout her career, Dr. Trueblood has been committed to staying up-to-date with the latest advances in her field. She participated in annual testing for cytology competency as required by federal law, as well as biennial state medical license renewal requirements for continuing medical education (CME). She attended a variety of in-person CME-accredited activities, including those sponsored through the College of American Pathologists and American Society of Clinical Pathologists, as well as ASCP-sponsored CME activities in surgical and cytopathology.
Dr. Joy Trueblood’s dedication to her profession and commitment to staying current with advances in her field has made her a highly respected and sought-after pathologist. She is a true asset to the medical community.
